A New Adventure

Welcome to the blog! My name is Ben and I am a 3rd Year Nursing Student from New Zealand. When I’m not studying or drawing up antibiotics, I can be seen running around the streets and trails of my beautiful home city, Dunedin. For a while now I’ve been craving an extra challenge. Something I can do in between placement shifts and runs. I have always been interested in blogging but have never really put enough dedication into it for anything to come of it. I never had anything interesting to write about either. Now that I’m on the verge of becoming a fully registered nurse, I feel that I have a lot more to write about this time, so here it goes!

What kind of content will I find on this blog?

With this blog I will be steering well clear of directly describing any experiences I have had in practice as I don’t want to take any chance of crossing professional boundaries or risking a breach of privacy. That could land me in BIG trouble.

However, I still hope to write about topics relevant to my personal experiences as a student nurse. For example, on a mental health placement I might consider doing a write up about anxiety and provide some tips based on a review of the literature but I will never share information about real-life scenarios.

Here is a list of things I may consider writing about on my blog:

Nursing

  • Tips and tricks which have helped me through my 3 years of study e.g. exam and study tips, time management skills, de-stressing techniques
  • Relevant topics in the news to do with health and nursing e.g. Legalisation of marijuana, nursing pay, health trends
  • Topics of personal interest e.g. stress in student nurses, sleep hygiene, nutrition and exercise, safe staffing and work hours

Running

  • Race reports
  • My training plans and routines
  • Tips and tricks I have picked up through the years
  • Extras e.g. my favourite running playlists, workouts, stretches

I’m open to writing about anything else. I absolutely love music so may even consider writing a couple of album or song reviews. I’ve never officially reviewed an album before, but it sounds fun.

Why did I decided to create a blog?

I’ve always been interested in this sort of stuff. I really enjoy reading biographies. I just enjoy learning about other peoples lives and their own experiences. Everyone has their own unique story and everyone can learn something from these. I recently completed an autobiography by Steven Adams, a New Zealand basketball player playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. He went from having almost nothing to becoming New Zealand’s best ever basketball player. His story along with many others motivates and inspires me to continue working towards my own goals. I’m no Steven Adams, but I hope that one day I can inspire someone the same way through my own line of work.

When I was younger I made a bunch of YouTube channels in hope that I would be the next big YouTube star. This obviously didn’t work out for me. Turns out I wasn’t the only 13 year-old boy who had these aspirations. I also had many attempts at making blogs in the past but as I was still so young I didn’t really have anything to write about. Now that I’m slightly older and have completed 2 and a bit years of nursing school, I decided that I would give this blog thing another go as I hope to actually have some reasonably interesting stories to share this time.

I feel quite weird for saying this but essays in nursing school have always been something I’ve looked forward to. I’ve received good marks in most of my essays but I wouldn’t say I’m an expert writer, certainly not an expert blogger. Writing leaves me satisfied. I enjoy starting with a blank document and then seeing how it all comes together. It leaves me with a feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction. None of my work will ever be perfect, but maintaining this blog will allow me to practice and improve my writing as I go along so that I can work towards making it as good as I possibly can.

This blog is a personal endeavor of mine to try something new no matter how bad I may be at it. I just want to let go of all expectations and do something which leaves me satisfied, even if I fail badly. There are no expectations or pressures on me with this project. I’m just here to share my experiences and if you want to listen, that’s entirely up to you.
